Dr. Marla McMahon (Dr. Marla) is a clinical psychologist and a certified yoga teacher. She completed her doctorate in clinical psychology in 1996 at CSPP/Alliant University in San Diego, CA. and has been working in the field of psychology for the last 20 years. Dr. Marla’s clinical experience includes working as a pre-doctoral intern with children and families at the Children's Outpatient Clinic in San Diego. She also worked as a post-doctoral intern at a life span and ADD specialty clinic and at the San Diego Children's Hospital. Her work has included individual and group psychotherapy, psychological testing, play therapy, and art therapy with children, adolescents, and adults.
As a Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Marla works with her clients on gaining new perspectives, restoring balance, and increasing well-being in their lives. She uses a holistic, integrative approach to psychotherapy tailored for individual needs. After reviewing a person's unique factors of past and present concerns, she incorporates mind-body awareness to increase their sense of well-being, decrease stress, and improve their confidence to handle life's challenges.
She works with men and women going through a variety of concerns such as stress reduction, depression, anxiety, and relationship problems.
Dr. Marla’s practice includes a focus on women's emotional and mood issues through the life span including those during pregnancy, post-partum, mid-life, peri-menopause & menopause. Over the years, she has worked with hundreds of women in areas involving: mood imbalances, body image and weight concerns, female adolescent development, trauma (PTSD), and cross cultural issues.
Dr. Marla also specializes in treating adolescents and college students on learning coping strategies to deal with stress, social issues, anxiety, depression, and life transitions. She uses a holistic mindfulness approach in her therapeutic work with young adults.
Dr. McMahon has received training in mindfulness meditation for stress and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) through the UCSD school of Medicine and through the training of Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD. She also has advanced training in Mindful Eating through Esalen Institute. She has completed level one training in i-REST yoga nidra meditation with Dr. Richard Miller.
In addition, after being a yoga student since the late 1990's, she completed her hatha yoga teacher training (YTT200) at Yandara Yoga Institute in 2013. She is a certified Restorative Yoga teacher. She also has received training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) to adolescents and is certified in the MBSR-T program. In addition, Dr. Marla is trained in sound healing & sound meditation using Tibetan and crystal bowls, Gongs, and other instruments to facilitate the therapeutic process.
A mother of two college students, Dr. Marla understands the busy and rewarding life that motherhood is. Her interests outside of psychology include: yoga, health and wellness, hiking in the mountains or near the coast, paddle boarding, photography, and writing. She finds her greatest sense of peace when she is at the ocean.
